Tirana is one of Europe's most surprising capitals — energetic, green and splashed with colour. The heart of the city is the vast, pedestrian Skanderbeg Square, ringed by museums, the Et'hem Bey Mosque and the clock tower.

Wander the Blloku district for cafés and nightlife, ride the Dajti Express cable car up the mountain for sweeping views, or step into the cold-war tunnels of Bunk'Art to understand Albania's recent past.

Good to know: Tirana is walkable and best enjoyed slowly over coffee. Most travellers spend a day or two here at the start or end of a trip.
